The 97th Academy Awards: How to Watch & Where to Stream for Free

The complete list of nominees for the 97th Academy Awards, Hollywood's most prestigious honor, has been officially announced today by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (via Oscars.org). Revealed during a live broadcast, the 2024 nominations showcase an intriguing and impressive lineup of the year's best films. Leading the pack is Netflix's musical Emilia Perez with 13 nominations, followed closely by The Brutalist and Wicked, each earning 10 nods. This year's list also includes some surprises, with Brazil's I'm Still Here (check out the trailer), The Substance, and A Complete Unknown securing multiple nominations. Fans of Dune: Part Two will be pleased to see it recognized in several categories, despite earlier speculation it might be overlooked. The Academy has selected ten films for Best Picture, including Anora, Conclave, Nickel Boys (yay!), Wicked, and The Brutalist (my personal favorite). Without further ado, here’s the full list of 2024 Oscar nominees:

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 2nd, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, broadcast live on ABC. This year’s event will be hosted by the legendary Conan O’Brien. Below are the nominations:

Congratulations to all the nominees! I’m thrilled to see The Brutalist leading the pack—it’s my top film of 2024, and I’m glad it resonated with Academy voters as much as it did with me. A Complete Unknown also impressed with its acting nominations, particularly for Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro, both of whom I highlighted in a mini-review after my second viewing. However, I’m disappointed Nickel Boys missed out on a Best Cinematography nod—it truly deserved recognition there. Additionally, Saoirse Ronan’s stunning performance in The Outrun was sadly overlooked in the Best Actress category (I’d swap her in for Fernanda Torres). On a brighter note, I’m delighted to see Gints Zilbalodis’ animated gem Flow and Dune: Part Two earning well-deserved nominations. While there will inevitably be debates and complaints, I think this year’s lineup is strong overall. What do you think of the 2024 Oscar nominations?
